Sourceforge problem again?

Post by artaxerxes »

Is the Exult team concerned about that kind of stuff?

Do you have a backup plan in case sf is no more available?

Could you let us know by advance? (it was a great think that we had exult.sf.net to let people aware of what to do after the jackchaos.com thing. If exult.sf.net is not there anymore, where do we go?)

We aren´t likely to loose any code and as it looks SF is also not going away soon. To the contrary they are even employing people and about to translate their docs to aother languages.
And if all fails for some reason you are always likely to find Exult via google. Also our irc log is independent of SF and you are likely to find a new url if SF goes down.

Plus, we all have recent code on our home machines. The worst that could happen is that we would lose the history of all the changes, but that wouldn't affect the project's future.

So suppose the impossible: Sf decides to take off all projects unless they become sf's propriety.

Assuming it happens, where are you guys going to put your development stuff? and your website?

What channel is exult on? irc.sourceforge.net? Any other backup plan?

I don't want to be alarmist. I just want to protect my back knowing where things will be in case we can't rely on sf anymore.

Our irc channel is on irc.openprojects.net (which is completely independant from SF)

Artaxerxes, why are you so worried ?
If anyone should be worried it should be us (The Exult Team). When (if) something happens we'll take action. Until then, who cares ? I'm personally more worried that EA might say that Exult is illegal, etc.
It's not that Exult is something vital to any of us: it's a fun part-time thing to do. If we're in a situation where we cannot continue to develop together, that's ok, it was fun till it lasted.
Relax, and enjoy the ride for the time being.

If it went so far, I would find it amusing to see SourceForge attempt to claim ownership of Exult, and then EA getting all pissy over copyright and trademark violations. :-)

Yes, Nadir has it right. And keep in mind that for the first year of Exult's life, it lived in a Geocities account. As long as we have the source, we'll find some way to work on it.

(BTW, I never heard back anything from Mr. Brown at EA.)
