Am I missing some music?

Post by JDR13 »

First, I'd like to give major kudos to the creators of this wonderful program. I've just recently discoved U7 for the first time, and I think it's fantastic to be able to play it in Windows 7 without having to mess with dosbox.

Anyways, I have a question about the in-game music. Is there supposed to be music all the time? I'm only hearing a few beeps and such when I'm outdoors. I'm not sure if that's supposed to be ambient soundFX or if it's not playing properly.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit, and a Sound Blaster X-fi. I honestly have no idea how to set up the audio options to get the best results. Right now I have the midi driver set to "windows", and the device type set as "GS".

Also, why does the entire screen light up when I activate a light source at night? Is that a bug, or just a limitation the engine?

There is not supposed to be music all the time. Music cues are played at specific locations; otherwise, the silence is filled with various ambient noises. The sound effects are from the early 90's, so they won't sound very realistic even in the best case, but... I like em, anyway.

You could examine the digital music and sound packs available on the download page. The digital music may be better than native midi, or it may not. It's a worth a try. One or another readme-file should have simple instructions on how to enable the music and sound packs after downloading.

Since Ultima 7 originally used only 256 colors, doing graduated light effects was not really feasible. As a result, all light sources affect the total light level of the entire screen. The circles of light under street lamps and such are a kind of hack, in addition. Exult emulates the original engine in this respect.
