Is there anyway to get him back to Monitor? I've had him follow me all the way through the dungeon, but once he gets to the stairway he won't go down it with me. Is he not following because the stairway is actually a teleporter?

I remember that he gets to a point when he says "aghhh, my chest explodes" and dies.

Yes. Then you can take his body back and get it cremated for cash. It might be a dodge to avoid giving the players frustration with the not so great and slow pathfinding when he's following you.

BTW - is he supposed to protect Goblin's possesions when you take them?
While recently playing [with SI Fixes] he did and called other guards (sic!) so I needed to kill him.
