Light sources not working...

Post by Sergorn »

So... I am replaying Serpent Isle with the latest snapshot of Exult and I come into an odd and somewhat annoying bug: external light sources doesn't seem to work properly.

Basically: if I carry a torch in my hand, it lights everything properly.

However if there's a torch on the ground, or a candle in room, a torch on the whole, or the lamps in the street... they doesn't light anything even when they're on.

This has basically lead me to cheating with the Infravision key when needed (taht is until I have a perma light item :P), but well... I was wondering if anytone else ever got this bug?

I am also using the SI Fixes mod, altough I don't know if this might have anythign to do with it.

Thanks

I *think* it might very well be caused by SI fixes but I'll take look, when I'm homeon sunday if no one else speaks up.

I tried running a different game without SI Fixes - and it appears the issue comes up as well.

Another thing is that sometimes, the light doesn't switch as it should when leaving or entering a cave (note that this also happend to me in Ultima VII, but with U7 lights worked as they should beside that).

One really freaky exemple: when I enter the caves of the Monitor Crematorium, it keeps being daylight in there. If I double click on a torche to light it on the wall... then it turns dark, and darkness remains if I go out. This is fixed if I save and reload a save - but really odd

At least SI appears to be stable - for some odd reason I kept getting crashes and freezing while I was replaying U7

I've gotten weird light things too...it seems to always be daylight at midnight and in caves...
it does come and go, but I can't see consistent behaviour. It happened the first time when I looked into Harnnas crystal ball in Monitor...
Kinda ruins the mood, when, for example, you're "sneaking" into the Temple of beauty under cover of darkness that isn't there.
Oh well.

Funnily enough I now have the opposite bugs: light stays even when it's supposed to be dark. Oh well... let's pretend I already have a Fire Sword.

On a side note I've also come up with a nasty bug of unkillable monsters.

This happened to me with the Stone Harpis in Ultima VII, and now I have to the same things with skeleton there. I hit, I hit but they never take any damage :(

That's not a bug. Some monsters are immune to certain forms of damage. Stone harpies are immune to magic weapons (and possible fire and lightning).

Magic weapons include magician's wands, the Black Sword, weapons "of Destruction", and most things that glow. Firedoom staves, fire wands, fire swords, and lit torches (IIRC) deal fire damage. Lightning wands and glass swords (IIRC) deal lightning damage. Most of the rest deal normal damage.

Since magic weapons hurt everything but stone harpies, just give everyone magic weapons and bash the stone harpy with your fists (or carry a spare two-handed hammer or something). Alternately, carry around some powder kegs or a cannon. I think those deal normal damage. They're more fun anyway.

AFAIR stone harpy can be killed with glass sword. Black Sword worked also fine, but I'm unsure here [but not its death ability]
Are there any more stone harpies in the game beside the one in Spektran, btw?

Well I never had any problem with killing Stone Harpies with magical weapons before - so this was odd.

In the original game you seemed to need non-magical weapons or a glass sword to kill them physically. Though the Great Dagger was an exception to that rule. They worked just fine.

This should work a lot better now.

I can confirm it. I don't know how that goes with Ultima VII, but as far as Serpent Isle goes light sources seem to work as they should now!

Thanks!

We also tracked down a regression in August which made combat odd, meaning that monsters attacked rarely or that they didn't do much.
Next snapshot should have that, maybe that makes your fight with stone harpies and skeletons better, too.
