Can't hear speech when using OGG files

Post by MagikGimp »

With use_oggs set to no I can hear Guardian at the beginning but not with that option on. I am using both music OGGs and the Roland MT32 sound-effects files. Please advise as to what I am doing wrong. Many thanks.

OK so I switched to emulating the CM32L and lo and behold the speech came back... until now, so it's gone again. <:/

Switching between both does nothing but my guess to fix this is that I need to delete some files, those that are created when the game is run. Am I correct or is there something else entirely that I need to do?

I didn't realise this could be a potential bug; here you are:

1) Exult version: 1.4.x Snapshot (2010-03-18)
2) OS: XP Home SP3
3) Sound: SiS 7012 chipset
4) Video card: ATI RADEON 9200

Everything else I presume is irrelevant as I haven't encountered anything else go wrong so far, oh wait, apart from some graphics blacking out but I think that was due to running the game on a scaled up higher resolution.

Again, I can't see this being a bug, I just assume I'm doing something wrong my end as this would have been reported ages ago surely.

Cheers.

Can you post the first 30 or so lines of stdout.txt? You can find it most easily by going to Start->Run and typing "shell:local appdata\Exult" (without the double-quotes). Also: what are your audio settings?

In the audio options gump, can you try enabling digital music, setting midi driver to disabled then restart Exult and post the new stdout/stderr? Also, please double-check that the music oggs are at "C:\Program Files\Games\Exult\data\music" (according to your stdout)

The digital music is fine, it's the speech that doesn't work.

Can you try using the Alt+1 cheat key to show the sound tester and playing voice files? Then check if anything new appears in stdout/stderr.

OK, some development- the Guardian questioned (in voice!) my direction again so speech does work so it's just the intro that doesn't work. How about others who are using the latest snapshot seeing as most people skip the intro? If it's of any use, I use the switch --nomenu when starting the game. As far as I'm concerned I'm happy with how things are now (speech seems to be OK apart from the intro of course and I'm happy with Roland emulation) so I consider this now to be a snapshot bug, however those are dealt with. Thanks for all of your help everyone.

But did not only the SG intro have digitized speech? If my memories don't fail the BG intro was silent (only music and some adlib-/roland-effects).

I can reproduce this issue in neither Ubuntu nor in Windows, having tested both plain FoV and FoV + Keyring. Your configuration seems OK, and there are no real issues printed in stdout/stderr; one the few things I can think of is a corrupted or missing 'introsnd.dat'.

It's strange isn't it but I'm not bothered any more now that I know that the other speech is working or at least I assume it is. Is it possible that each speech file will play once but then not again? I guess I won't know until I hear the Guardian tell me I'm playing the game wrong again; I'll post here again at a later date.

Hi guys,
I was experiencing exactly the same problem as described above.

After reading Marzo Sette Torres Junior's comment about a corrupted introsnd.dat file I replaced mine with another copy and it fixed the problem.

F.Y.I.
I was originally using the files from "The Complete Ultima 7" cd that I bought years ago.

I took just the introsnd.dat file from the Ultima 9 extras disk.

Hope this helps!

Hate to bump this, but I'm having the same problem. The speech has no sound. Just subtitles. I've tried changing a lot of settings and can't get it to work.

I've tried searching for a introsnd.dat file to replace to see if it works, but can't find one anywhere on the net and don't have the Ultima 9 extras disk. Is there any other way to fix this problem? I'm wondering if this affects later in the game, and don't want to miss anything.

Get it from your original disk. If you don't have it... Tough luck...

What's that suppose to mean? I have the file already on my pc, but it sounded like it needed to be replaced to get it to work. I also don't see how if it runs fine in Dosbox that it's a problem with that particular file. It's likely some kind of problem with Exult reading the file or something. God knows why a file from Ultima 9 works when replacing it.

I mean that you should replace it with the file from your original disk. The U9 extras disk is just the Ultima Collection again as far as I assumed.
But before you overwrite it, can you do a checksum of the file and post that checksum here and please tell us which version of U7 you have (original floppy disks, Complete U7 CD, Ultima Collection).

I tried replacing it. It's the same file though as far as I can tell. Can you tell me how to run a checksum real quick?

depends on your OS, some tools on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checksum
If you are on Windows and by chance you are using Total Commander, it has the option to make checksums. But very important is to know which version of the game you are using so I can check against that.

This took awhile to figure out.

Checksums for: INTROSND.rar
MD5: 4deb0b6eed5a8e18a9b9a81a90479e4e

I am using Bitser. Not sure if that matters. Just picked the first program I could find. I'm using windows 7 64 bit. I just tried replacing the file with another I found on the web, but it didn't work. I think it was the exact same file as they were the same size and everything.

To go into the problem more in depth. The static comes on for 2 seconds 3 times, but stops while the screen is still flashing back and forth between gray and blue. No sound when the face is peaking out or speech after that. Background music works fine. It's almost like it gets hung up on the static somehow because the static lasts longer in DosBox.

Introsnd.dat NOT introsnd.RAR (the checksum of an archive doesn't help since there are a dozen ways to rar a file and eachgives a different checksum, not to mention the different packers).

And most importantly, WHICH version of the game?

sorry that program would only let me do checksum of an archive. Didn't know.

Used Jdigest this time.

I think this is right.

MD5:
b24217a3b3488efb3a306671936aef89 *..\..\Ultima7\STATIC\INTROSND.DAT

Using Ultima Collection.

Just to add I found another introsnd.dat from another source. I put that file in its place and it seemed to work, but I did some testing and it only seems to work sometimes. I even tried changing some variables to try to figure out the problem. Seems to be random. I've even tried replaying it with the same settings after getting it to work, but it doesn't always work. It's so confusing. I don't know what's causing it to work and not work.

I keep Midi disabled, everything else enabled. Exult 1.49 (stable version)

With Soundblaster enabled there is no static sound.
With Roland32 there is just 3 short, static sounds.
With both there is no sound when the head starts to pop out of the screen.
Both have had success running the speech.

Not sure if any of that helps.

same checksum I have here, and it works fine.
So you have speech?
The static not playing is a different problem. And what are you talking about with:
With Soundblaster enabled there is no static sound.
With Roland32 there is just 3 short, static sounds.
With both there is no sound when the head starts to pop out of the screen.
SFX? You cannot have both SB and Roland SFX in Exult. You can mix digital music (from a MT32) and SB SFX or FMOpl emulation and Mt32 SFX though.

Those were the two settings I was changing. I have digital music enabled, but midi disabled. I was just switching between Soundblaster and Roland32 because it would work sometimes when I changed it. I just mean when using both differently there is no sound when the head starts to pop on the screen, but it sounds like that's a different problem.

Yeah I cant figure this out. I just tried it again about 8 times in Soundblaster and it worked like the 3rd or 4th time but not after that. All same settings 8 times. It appears to be random when it works. Have any ideas on how I can figure out what's causing it? Do you think exult 1.5 would make a difference?

It's about the speech. I don't understand why it works one second and then doesn't the next. Makes no sense to me.

Could you try the audio part of http://exult.info/faq.php#w9x_issues (set sdl waveout before starting exult from the command prompt)

Tried it out a few times. No speech all 3 times. Must be something else. I'm about to give up on it. Spent too many hours trying to fix it. Do you know if it will affect the audio later on in the game?

Same problem here. I read everything above and the faq and nothing helped. I actually just freshly installed both the game and Exult but still the same (by the way the Exult folder under Apps and the registry keys don't get removed by the uninstaller, I had to manually remove them). I can hear the speech when running in DOSBox. Any other possible solutions?

Maybe all of you experiencing this need to give more information on OS, muic device and drivers of the music device. Maybe we can find the common problem there.
Maybe there is a driver problem with playing more sources at once.

When all music and sfx playback is disabled does speech work? Does it work if only digital music is disabled?

Does changing sample_rate or disabling stereo help?

It still doesn't work if I disable music and sfx, nor if only digital music is disabled. I didn't see sample rate or stereo in the exult.cfg, do I need to manually add those? And what should I change sample rate to?

By the way, when digital music is disabled, I can hear the knocking sounds during the intro (instead of just the background music). Also, the music and sounds sound better to me when dm is disabled.. will I miss out on anything if I leave this disabled permanantly? OS is Vista 32bit..

So you never hear the speech?

Sample_rate is set in exult.cfg as shown in the docs. Multiples of 22050.

Digital music is just playing back recordings of the music played on a real MT32. When you disable it the music is played through your systems midi device. You might like that better, it's a matter of taste. Hence the knocking siunds being played back I guess. Another option is the FMOpl emulation which makes it sound as being played back through a Soundblaster back in the days.

You still need to provide information on your music device and driver version (and maybe you need to see if there are newer drivers fir this on the makers site).

And maybe exult needs a restart in between changing the settings.
And have you trued the old 1.2 versionof Exult?

No I never hear the speech no matter what I do. Changing sample rate didn't help. Disabling stereo didn't help. Music device is Sigmatel HDA most current version. I've tried restarting between each change. I've watched this intro so many times I think I'm going to see it in my sleep for days to come..
