If you could choose an game-engine

Post by Armar »

any game-engine, for remaking the whole ultima 1-7 (or 1 to 9) series. Which kind of engine would you take?

I myself would either like to have an engine comparable to Baldurs-Gate II and especially the fighting system of Baldurs-Gate. Or the engine currently used for upcoming Wasteland-2 and .Especially Ultima 7 lacks proper, demanding (round based) combat.

Alternativley i really would like to see an remake with a decent 3D, open world engine like Skyrim.

Actually i would pay for having these but with the copyleft for the ultima series beeing still with evil EA there doesnt seem any hope to realize this.

cheers,

Arnd

I'd like remakes of u1-6 and 9 with Exult (I don't care about combat in RPGs, I like the stories, combat is mostly an obstacle for me on my way to learn more of the story and a way for the game designers to prolong the playtime).
I'm mostly fine with U8 in its form.

U6 is actually bign remade with Exult but who knows how far that is along...

Visually, I'd be most partial to something laid out like Ultima 8, except with a 3D environment. So, basically, what they were originally going for with Ultima 9. Camera would be zoomed a bit further away, and the view would be freely rotatable though probably maintaining a bird perspective except for cutscenes.

The world itself could still be tile-based for all I care. EUO 3D just makes me giddy with its 3D-fied classic tiles.

But the gameplay itself... hard to say. There are so many cool, mutually exclusive combat systems, and yet Ultima's main draw was never the combat. I don't really know. I'd like typing keywords in conversations, at least.

And party member banter. And AI adventurers going from town to town and dungeons, and extra virtue-impacting interactions everywhere... I've occasionally thought of doing something like this, but all the extra features would take ages to program. :p
