Exult Won't Stay Installed

Post by spirittoo »

I don't know why ... I have the latest version of exult, but when I quit the game exult is no where to be found. I check the control panel and it's not there. When I want to go into the game I have to install exult again and tell it to open. Once I leave the game there is no sign of exult in the program.
If I install exult and don't go into the game it will disappear again.
Any idea what the problem is? I'm running win7 64. Have a GTX280 video card. Sound is from the motherboard. Thank you for reading my post.

This doesn't seem to be a problem of Exult but something you are doing wrong. I just can't fathom what it is you are doing wrong

I don't understand what is wrong with my sig? It gone now. I know I did something wrong with the install, but I don't know what.

When I installed it this time I put it in with the ultima folder instead of the program files, but it didn't make any difference ... even with the game open ... no sign of it being installed.

I'm not a moderator here, but my guess is that your signature was removed because it made it appear that you were asking the same question over and over again in every post you made.
This leads to people thinking you're actually asking the question and misleading others into answering it.

Your problem is definitely not related to Exult. If there's someone available near you that can possibly help you out, do ask. Perhaps it's permission related (are you an admin?), but then again, you apparently did manage to install it. Malware present? I honestly don't know.

Okay I see about the sig ... I am the admin and I go in as that when I install. I'll run so software that will check out the system, see if I can find anything. At least I can play the game.

Good luck. If you find anything, please do share. I bet I'm not the only curious person who likes to know what's going on. :)

So far no luck. Can anyone tell me where the game save data is located. Since exult won't install I can't find where it is. It has to be somewhere on the computer because when I go into the game it's where I left off, so that info has to be somewhere on the c drive.

Can you tell me what the file is called so I can do a search for it?

It's in your user profile, from there look in \AppData\Local\Exult.
Note: AppData is a hidden folder.

I'm still trying to figure out what is going on. It must have something to do when I was in the game and I tried to delete it. That's when thing disappeared. Something is preventing files from being loaded.

I installed ultima on another computer and tried to transfer the files to the computer that is having problems ... I got this message when I did ...

There was an error on the server for the file
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Exult\AUTHORS.txt”

Error: The file system reported an error.
Additional information: (2) The system cannot find the file specified.

There is something hidden I can't see. I even cleared the registry of any exult entries, and all the temp files. Something is hanging on because when I install and run the exult the game is saved from the last time. Where is that file being hid?

Any ideas please post.

The savegame stuff is not kept in c:/program files... nut in your userspace and doesn't need to be deleted. It's where your exult.cfg is stored c:/users/username/local something/exult (it's written down in the documentation)

@Donna Free: I already posted where the save games are stored when you first asked for it.

I'm getting the feeling it is indeed permission related.
Did you or someone else play around with file/folder permissions on that pc?

If I were you I'd find someone who knows what he/she's doing and have him/her check it out. You can really screw up things when toying around with permissions.

I assure you it is not permission related. I am the admin on the PC. I see where they say it should be store, but it is not there. On my other computers with the game it is, but on the one in question it is not. All the need files are not where they should be.

Another thing is the browser firefox always state checking for comparability when ever it opens, this started after the delete incident and I believe it is related some how.

The gamesave info is being hidden some way even though I have the files set to show hidden files as well. Something that could be hidden in the reg. as well. I think some kind of special software may be need to completely remove everything..

I know what I am doing ... I have been repairing and building computers for the past 16 years.

Quoting from the documentation:
Also not that on Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 you can quickly access this folder by executing "shell:Local AppData\Exult" in the "Run" entry of the Startmenu (or the "Run or Search" entry of the Windows Vista and 7 Startmenu).
If you run this, explorer will be in the right folder. In that you should have the cfg and the game subfolders. In those subfolders you will find the savegames and a folder called gamedat (that folder is the savegame that gets used when you "journey onward" or quicksave/load.
Exult only writes it install location to the Windows registry, nothing else is saved there.

Still everything is pointing at some problems with your computer, since no one else had this problem in the last 18 years, and it's working on your other computer.
Even if you know what you are doing, it's a good idea to ask someone else to look at it when you can't find what's wrong.

Also, what might be happening is that Exult gets installed without admin permission (even thiugh you are an admin user Windows asks you for permission to install in c:/program files...).
Look into c:\users\\Appdata\local\Virtual Store\Program Files\ whether Exult is installed in there.

Does the installer prompt via UAC to request user credentials?

Wellsir ... that's why I be here :D... I don't think the geeks on the computer help forums are going to know since I believe this is related to the game. Not so much exult, but the game itself. However as I stated before, the firefox browser is doing that compatibility check each time it opens and I feel it is related to the exult readme file.

It's definitely something related to the OS and browser on this particular computer since the others run the program just file, but I didn't have that delete episode as I did on the problem computer.

I need to figure out how to clean everything out and start all over again without having to format the HHD and do a fresh reinstall of the OS.

I'll ask the geeks about it, but I'm not expecting much.

" Also not that on Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 you can quickly access this folder by executing "shell:Local AppData\Exult" in the "Run" entry of the Startmenu (or the "Run or Search" entry of the Windows Vista and 7 Startmenu)."

The only reason that file is in that location is I took it from a computer with the working game and put it in manually. It will not let me put any of the exult files in the program files (x86) posted the error earlier. And check this out ... even though the gamesave from the other computer is there ... it will not use it. It goes to the game save ... where ever that is ... that was there in the first place. Now that's just plain weird.

"Does the installer prompt via UAC to request user credentials?"
Yes it does.
