U7 original key command
Perhaps you guys could help me out with a quick question.
Due to the limited amount of inputs on the xbox controller, I was looking for a list of the original U7 key and mouse commands, to provide the most basic necessary set of functionality.
I couldn't find such a list though.
Also, what are the bare minimum commands needed to fully play the game?

Re: U7 original key command
Look at defaultkeys.txt and go from there.

Re: U7 original key command
The point of my first message is that I'm not looking for the entire set of commands exult provides, but rather the set of the only commands needed to play the game as well as the original retail Ultima7 set of key commands.
Re: U7 original key command
Ok, the bare minimum you'd need are the S key to save games. (Plus the rest of the keyboard to type in a save game description unless you can rig up a slot system that has pre-named saved games like 1, 2, 3, 4, etc).
But to play it fully, you'd want access to the c and i keys. Plus the b, f, w, l keys in serpent isle. Plus alt-x for both u7 games.

Thanks
I've set it up so you can enter save game names with the controller.

Re: U7 original key command
Are any of those commands not available in any way using the mouse?

Re: U7 original key command
*grin* You sound as if you never played U7, perhaps having your own look might help to get a feel for the game.
You can avoid "S" if you double click the Avar, then click on the floppy symbol, it opens the save/load menu.
Same with B, the spellbook. It is in the Avatars inventory, so you can doubleclick there, then the book to open it.
F, "Food" (though I called it "Feeding" ): Same thing, CAN be avoided be double clicking the food.
W gives the overview of health: The heart in the Avatars paperdoll.
Lastly you get the partys overview L by clicking on the swords on the Avar's paperdoll.
As with most key shortcuts, they are exactly that: Shortcuts. They should make the gameplay simpler and not as lengthy. If you can just hit F and get a cursor each time to feed your members, it's a LOT better then rumanging through packs to find food.

You are right I have never played it
I'm planning on it. Have to get it all working first though!

Re: U7 original key command
Oh yes, and you'd need a way for the player to type in a name as well.
Wishstone, yea, I forgot about that floppy symbol on the equipment portrait. Technically yes, you can run the whole game from a mouse except for the character name and save game names.
But as I said and you did as well, to play it fully and simply, you gotta use the key shortcuts.
Personally I just use the S, C, and I keys in both games, and for serpent isle in addition to the s, c and i, I use the b, w and l keys. (Shamino carries all the food in my party).

Re: U7 original key command
Mind you, in the original I never used Key shortcuts (as I was too lazy to skim the manual for them), but then again, I was young and patient then... or something ;]

Re: U7 original key command
so if you can place sensible keys onto the controller keys if possible.
And does the xbox controller support stuff like :
botton x + button y to be something different than x or y ?
Then you can put many shortcuts onto the controller, I guess.

Re: U7 original key command
So far I've mapped the commands the following way:
L-thumbstick: move mouse
D-Pad: walk (like with keypad in 1.1)
Back: close all gumps
start: closeormenu
A: left mouse click
X: right mouse click
Y: toggle combat
B: inventory
white: feed
black: spellbook
It would certainly be possible to make somethink like the L-Trigger a 'shift' key which would change all the mappings.

Re: U7 original key command
Sounds good. But that's all your decision as it seems no one else here actually has an X-Box and can comment on the usability

Re: U7 original key command
not sure why it's easier to install on a zaurus
if you have a hacked xbox, you just ftp the files over, and run off the hard drive.
or, you can make an iso, burn it to dvd and play it like any game.
You can use a keyboard and mouse if you like, instead of the controller too.

Re: U7 original key command
seems like we could need an in-game key command changer (as you can only change the set per editing exult.cfg so far).

Re: U7 original key command
yes, an in game mapper would be nice... like a list of commands and then you click on one and press the key (or controller button) you want to map it to
Re: U7 original key command
that would be a bit advanced I guess
A simple changer for existing sets would help already (so you could change between X-box controller and default set)

Re: U7 original key command
Well the controller does not interfere with the existing default set. You can still use the mouse and keyboard with the xbox as if it were a normal pc.
Re: U7 original key command
Using a controller for a mouse game can be really annoying. It would probably be helpful if there was a key to "lock-on" (move the mouse cursor) to the next available target (NPC or object?). But I don't have an X-Box so you would know best if it's worth it.
Re: U7 original key command
REASON WHY IM INTERESTED IS CAUSE I HAVE A LAPTOP AND I WAS PLAYING THE SNES ROM VERSION WITH THE XBOX 360 CONTROLLER, AND FOUND OUT THAT IT SUCKS COMPAIRED TO THE PC VERSION. WOULD DEF BE LOOKING TO GET AROUND HAVING TO USE MY NUB OR TOUCH MOUSE.Author: Stealth (---.umrion01.pa.comcast.net)

Re: U7 original key command
WHY NOT USE A REAL MOUSE JUBS?
Re: U7 original key command
@JUBS: Please stick to some netiquette, so don't go resurrecting three year old threads and please don't post in all CAPITAL LETTERS. On the net, doing this is considered shouting and people don't like that at all.
That said, what is your problem/question? Does it even concern Exult (since you've been playing the SNES Rom version)?
