Ultima7 Gameplay Question

Post by Walkyier »

Sorry this may be OT since this is an exult board but anyways:

Can you somehow see the attribs of items (i.e. Armor rating, damage, weight etc.) ?
I find it very difficult to decide if I should wield a longsword and shield or a two-handed sword.
Nothing to find in the manual about that :(

in Trinsic, you can find a book about the values of the weapons and armor, it's in a small cabin west of the stables, not much way.

combat in ultima 7 black gate is generally inaccurate, a two hand sword is one of the powerfullst non-magic weapons, but a shield isnt also bad ;)

but it doesnt matter which weapon you chose, the enemys are at all very easy ;)

Thanks, I found the book and it makes things a bit clearer (although its still uncomfortable and I don't get, why there isnt anything in the manual).

Some more questions:
1. Is there anyone in and around Trinsic who can sell me a spellbook?
2. In shops I can BUY but can't I SELL ?
3. You say the enemies are all very easy. So is it possible to play through the game without any companions (which start to anoy me) or will I miss some cool quests, dialogues, hints etc. ?
4. Since thieving is not implemented in Exult and I don't want to cheat I have some questions about how it is handled in the original U7:
- Is thieving "safe" behind shut doors or will the owner know what I've done nevertheless ?
- what exactly are the consequences of being caught (attack, prison etc.) ?

Thanks in andvance !

1. Lord British gives you a spellbook in the City of Britain.
2. In some shops you can sell stuff, e.g. the jeweller's and chemist's in Britain.
3. You need a small band of followers. They give hints, they fight, and carry stuff for you.
4. Thieving is implemented in Exult, although NPC's in the original U7 do appear to get annoyed at your stealing more easily. It doesn't really matter, since you could steal well-nigh everything in the original anyway - as long as you'd drop the goodies into your companions' backpacks. I'd go for Exult

There are guards in U7 that may attack you when you steal stuff, and yes, you can under certain circumstances end up in prison.

3. and sometimes the dialogues are quite funny and I wouldn't like you to miss out on them. At least have the three Stooges (Iolo, Dupre, Shamino) and Spark with you.

The best is when you play SI and you finally find Gwenno, frozen in a pillar of ice.
At this point, if Iolo is with you, he'll say: "Now, she is really frigid".

You can see (and change) the attributes if you run ExultStudio. Right-click on a weapon or armor shape, select "Info...", and you'll get a dialog with pages containing their attributes. Note that in U7, attributes are global, so a sword's hit points will be the same for all sword objects in the game.

(Guess changing that would be a nice enhancement.)

That would be a nice enhancement, indeed.

In addition to Lord British, if you're really feeling brave, I believe that there's also a spellbook to be found in the depths of the nearby Dungeon Destard. That's probably a bit of a tall order at the start of the game, though.

If you want to go dragon hunting it's good :)
I used to very regulary go to Destard and make my fortune off the 4-8 gemstones that dragons have on their bodies, not to mention the good experience. I remember thoses days... back in the old Ultima7.

Oh btw, did anyone make their own hourse saughta thing and store all their weapons there? I did that in sentry's house after I left him in the wilderness ;)

Then one time I hack moved a whole lota crap to that wisps house in the middle of Yew. I cleaned all the spiderwebs out and all that garbage and furnished it with expensive carpets etc.. I actually turned out very goood except by that point in the game Lord Brishes castle started to disappear, did anyone remember that bug?
Then I got some of these generic enemy soldiers and changed their ai to patrol my castle :)
Even had a library, weapons chamber and a dining room. I tried to implement a bakery but I didn't know much about eggs and stuff so I failed there.
One of these days I think I will start making a small world for ultima7.

I'm quite surprised nobody has already, exult is a very good engine.

I never experienced disappearing buildings bugs in the original, but I've read that if you had lots and lots of gold then parts of buildings would go away.

Sounds like some kind of limit on the number of objects, I guess.

Having chests and crates (and barrels, and chests, and crates, and...) full
of gold/gems/nuggets/stuff (which was relatively easy to do) in your
hideout, no matter where it was placed, caused problems like that.
Though the less buildings and stuff around, the later you would notice the
problem, and you'd only really notice it when a large chunk of your stash
'disappears'. Most frustrating.

Does this "too many objects" bug happen in Exult?

I ask because it seems like most "crafter" npc's (Bakers, Tailors, etc.) tend to make huge piles of the same objects over and over again. Like a few days into the game, and a tailor has like 50 cloaks sitting on the table.

AFAIK, no.

I had thought the "temp items not being marked as temp and
reclaimed" problem was fixed by the time v1.0 was released, though I
haven't actually checked.

Hmm... no, the temp items are still there and permanant in v1.1cvs. Checked both with Rudyom and his potions and the bakery in britannia.

Also:

1) Rudyom is incredibly hyperactive, at least twice as fast as I remember in the original. And I _do_ remember this quite well since I spent hours stealing healing potions and such off his tables. *grin*

2) Rudyom makes those glowing red/yellow fire potions now. I certainly don't remember that from the original.

3) Somewhat amusingly you seem to walk faster walking diagonally then you do if you're walking in a straight line. So zig-zagging is actually an optimal way of getting from place to place as well as good to explore more of the terrain. *grin*

I don't think Exult has the bug involving too many items. But you're right, in that we probably don't mark NPC-created items as 'temporary' when we should.
