I haven't looked at Exult's code, but it shouldn't be too difficult to calculate the day-to-night transition algorithmically. (That's definitely more feasible than creating four versions of each image!)
Basically just need to reduce each images' reds and greens and boost its blues.

Re: A humble path
Also, humility is never at odds with truth. Saying truth, that you are the Avatar when someone asks, is not pride, it is simply honesty. That person might look up to the Avatar and would love to meet him/her someday, but he doesn't happen to know the Avatar's given name. So your real name would be u...

Re: A humble path
This reminds me of the plot line at Skara Brae where everyone's trying so hard to be humble, but the only person who succeeds is the one guy who isn't trying, and is simply enjoying his life.

Re: Line of Sight
The way I see it, it would be only the Avatar, because that's *you*. So you see what you would see; no telepathicly seeing through the eyes of your friends. (Of course, if primary control switches to someone else like if the Avatar goes unconscous, then line of sight would work from that person. Bas...

Re: Line of Sight
I like the idea of completely blacking it out. Fog of war works for strategy-type games, but for RPGs, only showing what your character would normally see makes the experience seem more real.

Ah, beat to the chase by the guy who actually designed it! (And I'm stoked that he's here commenting on this forum! Welcome!) Subtle digs at organized religion aside, I still don't think that any of this game insults the concept of religion and Christianity itself, so I don't think AJ has much to fe...

Re: BG issue
AJ: Ultima VII does not paint religion in a bad light. In fact, you are playing a sort of religious savior yourself, and one of the eight Virtues is Spirituality. The philosophy of Virtue that the Avatar must follow evokes Christianity and other world religions far more than the Fellowship does. I d...

Line of Sight
Here's a suggestion for greatly improving Exult: implement line-of-sight blacking out of the map, especially for resolutions larger than the original 320x200. Earlier Ultimas include the concept of line-of-sight, and black out areas that aren't in view. Besides making it more challenging to find sec...

Re: Lots of questions about Black Gate
If you're asking about Black Gate in general (and not a fan-made mod that I'm unaware of), here's your answer: The Ultima series includes combat and questing as parts of each game, but they're not the primary focus. The focus has always been the stories being told and on making the world its citizen...

Re: SI (with fixes): Furnace trouble...
I got bit by this bug as well, and figured out a way around it. I used the Telekenesis spell on the key to activate it, then added it to my key ring. That works if you can *see* a key but can't physically reach it!

Where'd virtues come from?
The Wisps did it.
Everyone knows they traded it to the Feudal Lords long ago in return for some kind of armageddon spell.

Ok, so I'm not missing anything in the game by not being able to turn in Spector's note and seeing him to justice?

SI: [SPOILER!]: Spector's note
Hey I'm curious about something. I found the incriminating note for Spector in the goblin's cave. Problem is, I found the evidence for Marsten's guilt first, and took it back. Now that Marsten is arrested, I can't seem to get at the conversation option again to hand them Spector's note. Is this a bu...

Re: How to make Exult behave more like a native Mac OS X app
(Just to clarify, while ~/Library/Exult might not be optimal for the save games, it's still better than putting invisible folders into the user's home directory. At least here people will be able to easily find it, and it is consistent with how other applications behave.)

Re: How to make Exult behave more like a native Mac OS X app
Fingolfin, Thanks for the response! (And thanks for maintaining the Mac port of Exult, I've had a great time playing with it.) You're right about the save game files, they probably shouldn't go in ~/Library/Application Support. They shouldn't go in Documents either, for the same reasons you mentione...

How to make Exult behave more like a native Mac OS X applica
I've been thinking about what would have to happen to make Exult behave more like a native Mac OS X application. This mainly has to do with where the various directories are put. Most of this would probably just involve changing the default config file. Background: On the Mac, the executable and all...

Intermittent crash in Exult 1.4 (Mac) inventory
I'm running Exult 1.4 on the Mac, and I'm occationally getting a crash when opening anyone's inventory screen. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. But, when it does happen, it also happens with new games, not just saved games. (I built the game using "make Exult_app" from the cv...

I wonder why the default on Mac OS X is to only let you have one game or the other installed at a time. The default really should be:
./ULTIMA7
and
./SERPENT
That's what I'm using.

Too much tremolo in 1.4 music
The music for 1.4 now has way too much tremolo in it (that's the stylistic waving of pitch). Tremolo may be good for spice, and only used lightly in certain places, but it's used everywhere. Some of the songs sound downright awful now. Here's an example (a saved game in Frigidazzi's chambers I origi...

wjp, Your change is the same as what I did to get it to compile last night (glad I was reading it right). Thanks for getting it checked into the CVS. Re: Bug in dialog - some phrases do nothing when chosen
Actually.. The other time I saw this bug (and dismissed, assuming it was unimportant) was when I showed one of these items (I think the slippers too) to a wizard, who told me to go to Bucia at (the name of her shop). It then gives two questions to ask: one about Bucia, and the other about the name o...

Re: Bug in dialog - some phrases do nothing when chosen
Pardon my ignorance about usecode, but does this mean that the official release of Serpent Isle listed "slippers" as a question but failed to provide a response - and that the official game engine would have caught this error and wouldn't have shown "slippers" as an option at all?

I took a look through the code. It does reference a variable 'cheat' in contain.cc (line 522) that's not defined anywhere in the file or its header: case 800: // Chest. if (!cheat.in_map_editor() && get_quality() >= 251) // Trapped? { // Run normal usecode fun. ucmachine->call_usecode(shnum,...

Building on Mac OS X / XCode
I've got Tiger and XCode 1.1 on my system. Has anyone here had luck getting it to build with XCode? The only instructions I've seen have to do with building using CodeWarrior, which I don't have.
Thanks!
Thanks!
