Re: Ultima VIII???

Yeah. Pagan doesn't run all that well in dosbox. I couldn't get sound to work right in that at all, no matter what settings I tried and if you speed the thing up enough that it doesn't leave you crawling, it still slows down in some spots and doesn't play well. I had it run better on a 486DX33. :( I...

Re: Ultima: Odyssey is dead

Ok. I see your point Jason. It is still not easy to do and can end up being shallow. For example, I have had an idea, for the text based game I play at, for a NPC which starts out merely as a rumor, then eventually gets awakened and someone has to put him back in his box. The problem is making thing...

Ok. So maybe one game got it right. Out of how many? lol Seriously, I think Jason missed my point. Why should the same wizard be the only one person in the entire world with a wand of lightning and why should anyone have to repeat the quest and kill him over and over and over, just to replace that w...

The drawback to such a system being that they is no AI system capable of generating lots of reasonable and interesting quests. So, quests usually end up being either premade and non-repeatable or your staff has to spend 90% of the time making quests, which means they get little if anything done, unl...

Re: Ultima: Odyssey is dead

Bad design.. It is the same with text based muds. If the 'primary' or 'only' means to gain exp, level and get stronger involves hacking things to death, then that is what 90% of the people will be doing, over and over and over. There are really only two solutions. De-emphasize the combat, which is n...

Umm. Actually those where 'old' FCC limits, imposed when the phone systems where still doing a lot of transitioning to better quality equipment. About the time Ultima 4 (I think) was out, there was a game for the Apple II called Wrath of Danethanor or something like that. I don't remember the exact spelling.
