Post by lanor »

I've looked at this a couple times, but have never been able to duplicate it.

It would appear that the door being opened isn't being opened correctly- its as if it gets half way through the motions then the computer realizes it doesn't have the right key or something. Sorry I repeated myself there. I sound like a technical advisor hehhee.

I remember something similar in the original game: when the pikeman asked me to follow him, the red x appeared for a second or so, and then the game continued. I thouht it had something to do with the key of fire (or of ice?); it didn't attach to the keyring, and so I supposed that was to blame for the error. I then tried without the key, and the x mysteriously disappeared...

I don't think it has to do with that certain key, since theres really no reason for it to.

Re: Training in monitor

I second Dirty Hairy, as in I had this happen to me in the ORIGINAL SI.

But I think it's inventory related. Maybe all your stuff couldn't fit into a chest/space of the guard when it's taken off you? I couldn't duplicate the situation again, though I had it several times with the original.

Re: Training in monitor

I just loaded exult. Apparrnetly..your stuff is stored in the chests below..(I didn't know this previously!) I think the X occurs when your stuff cannot fit into the chest. e.g. barrel?

WIll try out...

I would think that the chests have near infinite storage.
Soule

Re: Training in monitor

Post by Soule »

That's true, you don't lose any items after a train. Perhaps the original game distributes among the 8 chests, while Exult makes one chest unlimited?
Stuart

Re: Training in monitor

Or, more likely, a different chest depending on which character trains?
Dirty Hairy

Re: Training in monitor

Post by Dirty Hairy »

I, too, think it is inventory related. The x is displayed when an you try to place an item in an container it doesn't fit in, or when you try to attach the key of ice (sorry to mention it again :-) ) to the keyring.... As the original game always tried to attach a new key to the ring, it behaved that way every time when the key was stored in your backpack (or when the inventory was reordered, e.g. when your items were stored in the chest). But of course I don't know if exult behaves the same way... just a guess...

Exult just does what the Usecode tells it to do (placing your items in the containers). I tried to see the bug using a savegame in someone's bug report, but it worked okay.

So... maybe it got fixed recently? There was a pathfinding bug I fixed right around around the time of the RC2 release.

Hm, I just did the first part of SI, cheated to get some money and skill points, and training didn't work for me. After the pikeman said "follow me", he walked to the stairs, waited a couple of seconds, and then went back to his seat. The party just stood still all the time.

I'll try that tonight. If I remember, the party members should stay still. But after the Pikeman walks to the top of the stairs, he should then walk down them, with the Avatar following a moment later.

Yes, that's what I remember too. However, nobody moves, only the pikeman. By the time the avatar should start to move, the pikeman walks back to his desk. (And the avatar just stands there)

Argg! I started a new game, teleported close to the Field, cheated myself some Monetari, and then tried to train. It worked without problem.

Any other thoughts on getting the bug to happen?

I am having the same problem, i go to train the guard says follow me he then walks down the stairs. The Avatar starts to walk goes about 2 or 3 steps then the hand flashes a red x and the game locks up. I tried starting from scratch, same thing. I tried the upgrade for exult and the same thing happens. I would appreciate any help on this matter.

Please email me a savegame of just before you start to train. The red-X problem shouldn't be too hard to fix if we have a savegame.

Cool, could you send us a patch?

Re: Training in monitor

I had the Avatar strip naked, put the backpack down, fire all the companions and hold 100 Monetari in his hands. The training still doesn't work. He just stands there, and mutters "I could use a little food" from time to time.

A good thing then that the combat in the game is mostly a snap.

Re: Training in monitor

if you enable the cheats and enable the hack move cheat with alt + h and move the doors between the two set of stairs that lead to the upper level and the set that leads to the fighting pit, it actually corrects the problem enough to allow you to get the move arrow and walk yourself down into the pit and train. It may seem like a lot of work just to get to train but it will solve the problem for now.

Same problem, still don't work when I move the doors of the pit entrance....

Maybe we should all just go over DrCode's house and play on his computer since it never has any of the bugs. j/k ;)

FYI - I am also having this problem, even when I strip the Avatar almost naked before attempting training. I know that I did not have this problem in the original SI. I ran into a similar problem with the game locking up when you are waiting for Ruggs to come up to you at the Fawn drawbridge.

Okay, could someone submit a bug with a savegame just before training? Also, have you tried the latest 1.00 snapshot? I'd like to figure this out, but have never been able to duplicate it.

Re: Training in monitor

Post by IgnitusDragon »

This is really strange, when I go to the gates(go up the steps) with all default members(Iolo, Shamino, Dupre) I get a red "x" when I try to train one of them.
An "x" such as, when you try to move an object in your back pack to an area outside the room your in, or when you try to quaff a potion on someone whose outside the room your in. I don't have a save-game though...
Mimu

Re: Training in monitor

Post by Mimu »

Hmmmm, actually I got this a lot in the original game too, I haven't actually finished BG yet with Exult (Dupre started giving me too much trouble over stealing so I had to deprive him of life and... uh... anyway) so I haven't started playing SI yet so I'm not sure if it happens exactly the same way... but...

For some reason it seemed to me like the game thought I was trying to open the double doors to the arena after I had clicked on the name of the trainee, and then gave that red cross. I think my mouse cursor was always placed over the doors when that happened, while talking with the pikeman... just a theory which is probably wrong but that's what I thought was happening. *_*

Could this be a bug fixed by Silver Seed perhaps? It's just that some people seem to have the bug and some don't. I have it, and I don't have Silver Seed.
Then again, it doesn't sound very likely that Serpent Isle would come out with a bug of that magnitude in it.
IgnitusDragon

Re: Training in monitor

Post by IgnitusDragon »

It may be the opposite Willy, I have Serpent Isle and the Silver Seed, and I still get this error running Exult.
Training works, it's always worked for me in the original, I didn't do anything different than I did in Exult.
It does the same for sparring, or training any one of your people.
If you train the avatar he'll go in and then when he quits he'll go to the door and not open it- then the game is stalled.
This sounds to me like theres a path missing but I dunno.

Some possibilities to check:

Are you using one of the latest snapshots (1.00 or 1.1x)? There was a pathfinding bug fixed since the RC2 release.

Are you running at 320x200? That's the 'proper' size for U7; anything else might cause problems.

You didn't cheat past the copy-protection near the start.

Is anyone getting this problem on Linux? Mac? Or is it only on Windows?
IgnitusDragon

Re: Training in monitor

Post by IgnitusDragon »

Dr Code, you said that you teleported into Monitor and it worked for you(willem/wilem said it was messed when he did that).
So what gives?
I find it happening on both 1.00 and 1.1.
320x200.
runnin' Windoze.
Oh and I never cheat past the copy protection:D

Re: Training in monitor

Post by wjp »

That's possible. Also possible is that it depends on the location or current action of some of the trainers, or the exact location of your party when trying to train. It could even depend on the current state of the PRNG :-)
IgnitusDragon

Re: Training in monitor

Post by IgnitusDragon »

As far as I know this only happens in Monitor. As we know, the guard at the field is always sitting.
I always go up those front steps(the ones closest to the waiting room, across the street from the banquet hall) and stand right infront of the guy.
Each time before(using dos and u7) it worked right.
By the way, whats a PRNG?

PRNG = pseudo random number generator
IgnitusDragon

Re: Training in monitor

Post by IgnitusDragon »

I'm not sure how a random number generator could be involved.
Are you saying that it randomly gives the error?
Oh and does anyone have a link to some documentation on gaussian random numbers?

The non-hash pathfinder wasn't checking the Z coordinate when seeing if it has already visited a node. This broke pathfinding when stairs were involved.
IgnitusDragon

Re: Training in monitor

Or basically the game forgot to move the Avatar down the stairs.
Bless ye for fixing it :)
