Digging up Ultima 8

Well I'm playing U8.
When I last played this infamously last good'un(depending on your idea of quality) from the Ultima series- I found that the game hung up during the Necromancer thingamajig, and I almost thought it was going to this time around but I hit F7(which I think saves your game?) and it finished it, it was right around where the earthquake happens and the screen shakes but when I played before, the screen never stopped shakeing.
So anyway, now it does, but I realized that I have already found Deadmans Elbow, and Executioners Hood but that bloody necromancer won't take it from me. Does anyone know if I'm doomed, or do I just go back to those places where the reagents are located?

The same thing happened to me, and I don't know the way around it. Sorry, but I think you're doomed.

Actually I'm not doomed(thank...lord british?), you just go to those places, and come back to the Necromancer, all is fine. I'm in the test now, I think I've gotta find the last Necromancer.

Its actually a bug that has somethin to do with sound. It's on a FAQ somewhere. I think I had to disable all sound, play through the part, and then I was find after that. Just do a little searching, the answers out there.

Its happened in another place as well, but does anyone know what the F7 key does?

Ultima 8? I could never ever ever ever ever get this to run on my machine. I've tried Gaseous' Dragons hints and program. Nada. I've tried editing the Files=40 and whatnot. Still nothing. I kept getting... "Rest Avatar, you'll need it."
Uff... just bad programming and even worse support, I guess.
Any help?

I've had the same problem as SnowyThing on my Windows 2000 machine. My Ultima 8 did work once before, but no longer. It just crashes and says "Rest Avatar, you will need it." And when it did work, it was very unstable and would crash alot. It's because of these things I could never get into the game.

I've had numerous problems with running U8 - tried everything twice.
When I did finally get it running, it was with the help of Dragon Baroque's utility. Theres a link to it off
www.fansforultima.com - hell I'll just paste it here-
Ultima VIII in Windows -

Definitley worth a look if you are having Pagan problems.

Been there, Gileathane. I did everything on that site. I kept getting the error as I posted before.
I'm running Windows 2000. 128 RAM. SBLive!. PIII 700. Ect.
Ultima 8 was just rushed... I doubt there was even two days for bugtesting, if any.
Ciao!
P.S. Think you can help me out with getting U8 to work on my machine? Email me or add me to MSN at
SnowyThing@hotmail.com
Thanks!

I don't know why you would base Ultima 8's quality of programming on your experiences with it. Following that logic I can say that since it always worked excellent for me it is the most well designed, and coded, and tested game ever created.

Virtual PC for Windows is great for running the older Ultimas, especially if you've upgraded to XP like I have.

The Pentagram Team considers that Ultima 8 was originally programmed extremely well. Just because you have problems with it, doesn't mean it was badly programmed. A single bug is all that is required to cause a program to not work.

I consider SB-X's post quite sardonic and saphistimacated whatever that all means*shuffles feet*. Good Job!
Anyway, Ultima 8 is a well designed game, I just want to sit down dammit...
