U7run for WinXP

How could I be able to use U7run on Windows XP?
I like the classic gameplay better!
(especially the good cheating system, hehe.)
Is there a way to run it on XP?
If you know how, how do I do it?
(No, U7DPMI runs to slow, so don't ask.)

Where do you believe the original cheating system is better than Exult's ?

And no. On NT-based systems only U7dpmi works with the original. Runs quite slow with my P3-1GHz.

Hmm... Maybe the fact that the cheat system is fully FUNCTIONAL.
The Exult one is not done yet. It sucks--at least right now.

Who wants to volunteer to make either:
1. U7run work for XP
2.U7dpmi run faster.
I like the clasic things better.

Well, that's helpful, constructive criticism. Thanks!

you can also disable most of the features the exult team added. See the fAQ.

Skutarth, I believe the esteemed wjp is trying to tell you that your criticisms
are sufficiently broad to be of absolutely no use to anyone. Perhaps if you were
to, say, be slightly more specific. For example:
* "The cheat menu lacks 'this' from the original game, and it would be useful to
be able to use it for 'this reason'."
* "The rendering order is incorrect in 'these' areas, it needs to be fixed."
* "The scalars are too slow, is it possible to speed them up?"
All these are helpful, constructive criticisms, whereas yours are rather blunt,
broad, and ultimately pointless.
We await, in humble servitude, for your more pedantic suggestions.
Yours in *complete* sincerity,
Darke

How bout: no, suffer Skutarth. or fix it yerself, Suktuarth.
None of us are willing to fix u7run or u7dmpi. Exult is a more functional solution by far, besides setting up a 486 and running u7 on that. but yer obviously lazy.

As the voodoo engine does disgusting things with memory, and as Windows 9x doesn't really mind as it does *other* disgusting things, u7run is possible only under the *lesser* Windows.
The entire concept on which u7run is based is unthinkable under NT/2K/XP (and it is a *good* thing that it is so, apart from the fact that you can't play the original U7)
Speeding up u7dpmi is also very difficult because the main performance penalty is due to the context switching required to make it work.
The cheat system under Exult is far superior to the cheat system in the original.

Skutarth,
I've been playing Exult for over a year. Honestly, I can't go back to classic Ultima VII anymore. The unscaled graphics have become an eyesore to me. At first the new features seem trivial, but they really add to the game play and you gradually get used to them. The Exult Team is probably one of the hardest working and most personable open source groups around. Insulting their efforts isn't likely to get your ideas across, online or offline.
You have to expect that these kinds of projects are works in progress... indefinately. Enjoy the ride!
At any rate, since it seems obvious that you're either too lazy or impatient, here is a link to a means other than u7run/u7dpmi to get Ultima VII working on Windows 2000/XP and maybe even Linux:
http://www.bootstrike.com/Home/Online/u7emu.html
Hopefully, you're up to the challenge! In my opinion, the easier thing to do would be to simply keep using Exult. After all, you are using a modern operating system (even if it is M$ Windoze), so why not use the modernized game counterpart?

Interesting. That person uses VMware 3.0 to run it, and it works (though without sound). I tried an earlier version a few years ago, but wasn't successful.
But you should know that VMware is fairly expensive, anywhere from $100-$300. You can get 1-month trial versions from their website.

Personally, I've never understood the need for u7Run & u8run. I was able to get both u7 and u8 to run under Win 95 & 98 with only some tweaking of a PIF file. I assume that this would also work for Win ME, though I've never really used ME so I'm not sure about that.
Granted, the PIF had to terminate the Win9x environment and go to DOS mode (and in the case of u7, the PIF rebooted the machine first so that some mods to config.sys could take place), but still: there is no need to hack the EXE files directly.
True, this doesn't work for WinNT/2000/XP, but then again, neither does u7run or u8run.

Getting them to run on Windows using Dos-mode doesn't count
The purpose of U7run/u8run and even UnderworldNT is to make it possible to have other things running in the background while playing. Essential for some people (including me).
U8run works fine on NT along with VDMS, save for the sfx. And U7dpmi which comes with u7run works fine as well only problem is it is horribly slow

Really, I am. All I meant is that Exult is ok, but it isn't finished. That means it's not DONE. I believe I said:
It sucks--at least right now.
Key words AT LEAST NOT NOW. It's not finished--yet.
It has some better ideas than the original. It just doesn't have the potential to do what I want yet.
Don't get me wrong...
I think Exult rules.
It's still in progress.
Keep it up!

Do you think the Exult team is going to magically figure out why you think it sucks(assuming they care) and what you want changed? The point is that "It sucks" is not constructive criticism.
The cheat system doesn't look very incomplete to me, if that's what you meant.

Skutarth you are not making any sense.
Exult is at release candidate level, and that means that for us it is complete.
You can play and finish BG/SI. We have added different resolutions, scalers, paperdolls in BG, status bars, a complete cheting system (much more so than the one in the original), and ExultStudio is moving quickly into the "usable" territory.
You have not provided us with any construtive criticism about what you think is incomplete. We like praise, but we like and appreciate suggestions and bug reports.
