Huge map

If I wanted to make a gigantic game world, what's the best way to go about it?
As I understand things, the size of the map is set in stone. There's just no good way to make a bigger one without buggering the engine. The only other way I can think of is to break the map into pieces and somehow move the player from one map to another when he nears the edge of the current map.
So... an Intermap Egg on every single border tile?
Does anybody know a less unwieldy way to accomplish this?
