include keyring mod in snapshot

Hi, I've gotten the keyring mod working (at least it works temporarily) but then strange things start happening.. I equipped Dupre with a Death Scythe, only to find out that during a battle he was suddenly doing battle with a "Carpet Sample".. Other equipped items randomly vanish at an astonishing rate... This seems to come and go depending on when I reinstall it, so I cant lock it down for you as a consistent thing.. But the biggest issue is that, I'll meditate at a shrine(s), save the game.. And when I relaunch Exult to bring up my game again, it goes to the red moongate screen, then kicks me out of Exult.. I'm using the latest 1.5 snapshot.. I cant recover from this error unless I do a full ininstall/reinstall of Ultima... Even after I put the mod in place, it doesnt acknowledge it on the screen as an option to pick the mod or not as I've seen in some screenshots... So this may be something that needs to be looked into.. Consistently however, I'll install the full game, forge of virtue and SI added on, and when I add the mod it suddenly tells me that I only have regular BG installed, no SI or FOV. This prompts me to reinstall over that installation and suddenly the mod is active until the aforementioned save/reload bug strikes...

What this all boils down to is this for me... Since the mods installation instructions are cryptic at best and require one to hunt and peck elsewhere on the web for proper installation instructions, (which never seem to work anyway); and it doesnt come with it's own installation batch file... Is it possible to just integrate the patch into a seperate snapshot image for those who wish to use it without the hassle of mucking about with internal file structures? It really is a great mod... Just one suggestion however with the meditations, instead of just getting a word of wisdom from the shrines with no added benefit after the meditation is complete, perhaps that could be altered to bump up a skill or a stat after the meditation mission is completed, (ala Ultima V).. Any response would be much appreciated... And yes I realize that many people have gotten this thing to work just fine and will say it's something I'm doing wrong..

In case this helps.. I'm running a
Mac Mini 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo W/8Gb Ram
Dual Boot Mac 10.8.2 Mountain Lion & Windows 8 Home Premium 32 bit with Bootcamp 4.0

I have Exult running on both platforms but the windows one is the one that I run the Mod on... I dont have enough experience on the Mac side to be mucking with the internal file structures to get it to run since it's not really made for average people to play with like that to begin with..
Thanks for any help you can provide...

Peg.

It's easy to install the mods and it is explained in the documentation. If you are refering to any othe guide on the net, don't use that.
Follow the instructions in our docs and ask questions when you get stuck there. On the mac side it's easy as well, actually much easier than on Windows...

Don't want to start a new thread, but how do you roll up the carpet with the Keyring mod? There is no mention of this in the readme.txt?

Okay, so how does one go about installing it on a Mac? Please pretend you are talking to a 5 year old here.. I get the ideas about putting certain files into certain directories, but in the instructions some of those dirs simply dont exist to put files into... I just need the skinny on what paths to note in the exult.cfg and a step by step guide. It would be much appreciated. Thanks.

What folder doesn't exist? And well some might be required for you to create. Of course OS X doesn't have all the folders for exult pre created...
http://exult.info/docs.php#path_config_osx

And if you put everything as described you don't need to touch exult.cfg at all on OS X

Dom.... There are only two possibilities here...

1. Either I failed mastering the English language in middle school...

OR;

2. I have a note in the middle of my skull from God stating "IOU 1 Brain; signed God!" (of that I have little doubt sometimes, but I digress) :-P

I just simply cannot get the keyring mod to be recognized as installed by Exult.. I did EXACTLY what the official instructions said to do.. I unzipped the contents of the mod under \Library\App Support\Exult\BlackGate\mods and started a new game... Oh the game started just fine, just no recognition of the keyring mod being there... I deleted and reinstalled the latest Exult 1.5.0 snapshot and reinstalled the patch and still got just the basic games... (and yes, I have FOV and SI/SS installed too.)

I am completely clueless at this point.. I even opened up the keyring.cfg just to take a look see to find if there was something I was missing.. (ie.. an important path designation or something)..

I know; I know, it's a completely self sufficient module that's so simple that a 2 year old could install it.. Just place the keyring folder in the Mods directory and let Exult do the rest with a standard program launch... Hence no need to write a separate install program. I get that... Believe me I do... Well, there it is.. except i'm 42 and apparently dumber than my 2 year old peers.... Arrrgghh!!

It CAN'T be THIS Difficult on OS X.. I saw some instructions about launching the Mod directly; is that where I'm going wrong? Those were stated as being optional... According to the instructions I should just be able to launch the standard Exult program and let it deal with everything automatically, no muss; no fuss... That's the whole point behind this, isn't it?

The windows side was supposed to be harder to install, yet THAT was the one that I got working! Even if only temporarily and unstable as it was!

Ahem... Not to put too fine a point on this; but..... HEEEELLLLPPPPPP!!!!
(goes to weep in a corner)

Please do the following in terminal and copy paste everything that it spits out.

Code: Select all

cd "/library/application support/exult" && ls
cd "/library/application support/exult/blackgate" && ls
cd mods && ls
cd "/library/application support/exult/forgeofvirtue" && ls
cd mods && ls
cd "/library/application support/exult/serpentisle" && ls
cd mods && ls
cd "/library/application support/exult/silverseed" && ls
cd mods && ls
cd ~/library
cd "application support/exult"
ls
You can just copy and paste this in terminal in one go to avoid spelling mistakes.

Another two things to check though:
1. delete your exult.cfg in ~/library/preferences
2. what games do you have? Original Bg and SI and FoV and SS as well? If so, get rid of the orignal ones, and just install fov to the blackgate folder and SS to the serpentisle folder. The mods are NOT intended for the original games without add-ons

(edit: fixed the terminal commands)

Use this ppa if you use ubuntu; it always has the latest version, including the mods (you may want to disable it after installing exult; so that there is no possibility of savegame corruption while you are playing by updates, haven't really tested if exult saves are stable enough).

Dom!!! It worked!!! I got the option for the mod in the main launch screen after reinstalling everything (latest exult, game(s) and deleting the Exult.cfg)... I get all the new portraits and everything and (cheat teleported) my way to the shrine of compassion.. and sure enough, a heart hanging over it with Iolo telling me that we need the rune...

It looks like I literally just needed a fresh install of EVERYTHING; but it was your last two suggestions at the end that kicked everything over.. Many thanks!!!

Question Though; should there not be a similar "Show Mods" selection under SI? I recall seeing that on a website screenshot with a complete how to install guide.. (the one that I originally told you about that didn't work..)

So far I only see the selection under BG/FOV..

Ok, now onto the 45 degree angle shift.. That works under 1.5 now; correct? I was reading the other thread briefly...

for the rotate thing you need the snapshot from that thread, it's not in the main SVN.

for SI mods you need to install the SI fixes mod, similar to how you did it for BG

glad you got it working :)

Ok, I installed the SI update, but I still get no specific mod option on the start menu; is this one just built in by default so it wouldn't show up like that? I deleted exult.cfg after putting the fix in..

Also, I've been thinking; with the keyring mod, now that the shrines actually have a use, it would be really cool to publish an update that scatters the runes; stones, and lenses around Britannia; instead of them being conveniently located in the museum... Right now I feel like i'm walking into a Best Buy with one stop shopping for all my Avatar adventuring needs... (an argument could be made that since thievery is so rampant in the land that someone broke into the museum and stole the items..) Batlin up to his old tricks perhaps through a lackey? It'd make things much more interesting; especially if we learn that it happened just as word began to spread that the Avatar was back in town.) The curator could just say there was a mass theft and has no idea who did it...

Obviously originally there was no need for the runes since the shrines were useless, or the lenses without FOV; so the idea of the museum was understandable...

Any thoughts?

Again, how and where did you put the SI fixs mod?

As for your bg keyring ideas, best open a new thread called "BG Keyring suggestions/ideas" or so and write your ideas in there.
Marzo is likely to miss this in here

Well, I put the SI Mod in the Serpentisle dir under the "mods" subdirectory... Perhaps I should try the whole uninstall/reinstall thing again... I noticed that all my other directories under library/app data/exult are empty except in the mods folder where I put the SI fix... Does exult move the game dir contents to another location or something? That's my reasoning behind doing a fresh install, and applying both fixes at once... THEN launching exult.. But that seems a little ridiculous to me... Files dont just vanish... And I'm only looking through finder; so it should show everything.

Ok, going to post a new thread for the keyring mod idea.

Open terminal.app and copy/paste what I wrote above and hit enter.
Then copy all of terminal and paste it here.
