The Chaos Hierophant bug

So, I stumbled upon the exploded powder mill and, not knowing better, talked to the ghosts dwelling there.
I was quite confused about what he had to say - and even more confused that the other ghost in the room was seemingly a duplicate.

Now a bit later I coincidently found out that this is indeed a bug and even a "game breaking" one (called so in the aiera wiki).
Is this true? Is my game state doomed for talking with this ghost?
Or is the worst effect here that I was spoiled a bit about the events to come?

I have a save game before this incident, but I would rather continue with my current game, if possible.

I think you can just set global flag 555 to false in the cheat menu.

F2->f->555->u

Cheats must be enabled in the gameplay menu if F2 doesn't bring up a menu.

Edit: This bug is one of many fixed in the SI Fixes mod

Yeah, I've updated my exult version to the newest snapshot and installed the SI fix mod (its good that all that is save-game friendly).
Honestly, if 1.50x is the most supported version, why is 1.49 proclaimed as the "standard" version?
This is a bit confusing for new users like me.

1.49rc1 is the latest release.
1.5x is built straight from source code.
