There was an Add-On called "The Lost Vale", but it was cancelled by EA.

I recently played thru Ultima 8 again, using the U8-windows shareware. This would be a good game to remake from the ground up -- conceptually I really think it's great, but the execution is SO frustrating: not just the jumping puzzles and the frequent drowning, but the unforgiving movement and inventory interface. Did anyone else nearly lose their minds trying to set the reagents in the right places for sorcery spells?

Also, the way you get from place to place in Pagan is annoying. This was one of the two Ultimas I actually got with a cloth map, and it was frustrating to realize that the map was next to useless because the game was constructed as a series of interconnected areas, rather than a contiguous world.

I haven't yet downloaded the Exult beta, though I tried an alpha version that was quite impressive about a year ago. Could it be that this will be a good engine to try a rebuild of Pagan?

But it's a damn fine story; much better than Ascension as it shipped. And I'd love to see what happens in the Lost Vale ...

Gargunza, you obviously played U8 without the 2.12+ patch...

The plot of Ultima 8 is full of holes and inaccuracies, even with the patch. Sign of the things to come (UA).

However, Ultima 8 had a wonderful plot. It needed more NPCs and better dialogues.

U8 wonderful? Hmm..I guess in a way it is..with a great background story.

However, I am more for companions. I think U8 and U9 failed because you had no companions to bug you. Companions increase interactivity!

Companions would destroy the storyline. I think the real problem with Ultima8 was the lack of complexity to the combat... seriously, you can level up attributes by attacking air. To top that off, the power increase capped out quickly.... and when I got protection from fire later on, I was invincible to all but immortals. (which in itself should be changed... I like my killing rampages when I'm bored. They should just be very hard, not impossible)

Also I think an item belt, much like in diablo, would help in spell casting and potion use. But these are all just pipedreams until Ultima 8 becomes playable, and don't look at me, I lack the skill needed right now... but some day.

Also.. I found inaccessable story plot in my copy of Ultima 8 (had to look through the data files with a editor), possibly what was to become the Lost Vale, but it sounded like Devon was to actually become the ruler of Tenebrae and Aramina is more than happy to serve him, but I never was able to access this plot in the original game, or at least I didn't know how if it was possible. (The book Pentology, offers very little side plot information or even real information.)

Uh... Devon didn't become ruler of Tenebrae in your game? What did you do?

One more note... multiplayer U8 sounds very feasable... as long as everyone's not considered the avatar. (or at least one let one person per game complete certain quests... I don't ever want to see a server having Mordea die multiple times and have each player have to go through the entire plot on their own. Especially If I decide to rampage and kill important NPC's .... Note 2: Important NPC's better be a hell of a lot stronger or problems may occur.)

>Companions would destroy the storyline. I think the real problem with >Ultima8 was the lack of complexity to the combat...

No, actually it WAS the plot. There were indeed too many screaming holes, and areas where the player was sure there should be more to the story as hinted about by the map, and also the documentation of the game. The only thing that truily bothered me about gameplay was the long load times, and easy aquatic death (dipping your toe in water). The patch was at least well executed. Lack of NPC's to talk to did tend to make things drag a little also.

This being said, I did enjoy playing U8, but it was noticibly less plot oriented than U7 BG & SI. That's why it was such a shock to the system of many Ultima players. It was all about fighting with talking to people seemingly thrown in as an afterthought. (Origin did want you to feel that you were alone, that's why there was no party.) I think Origin worked heavily on the engine (for fighting, and whatnaught), and then tried to add bits of the plot until it was posibly forced to release U8. Someday maybe U8 will be effectively hacked (yes, I've read the FAQ... never say never... I remember hearing similar things about U7 and the source code...), and I hope the full plot will be found out, and restored (Lost Vale included).

I agree that the loading time was a bitch, but on a current PC, it's almost nothing. A bit of coding to speed things up would always help too.

With the average amount of RAM a modern PC has, there's probably no need to even do any loading between maps. You should be able to keep the whole world in memory. (But of course, U8 doesn't do this, no matter how much RAM you have)

That U8-Windows shareware..is that the patch that rarely works or is there another way to play U8 in Windows?

it is not shareware. it is free. That patch works for the version that shipped with the Ultima Collection and versions that have the patch installed.

I was speaking of DOS, so just run smartdrv.exe.
Under Windows, the OS already does effective disk caching

Hey, I got a relavent question!!! Is there any utility (other than the orginal installer) that will unpack the Ultima 8 data? I would run the installer, but that requires dos or windows... both of which I do not use anymore, so loading one or the other seems like a pain in the ass for me and possibly any other linux user or even mac users. I thought it would be a good idea to ask this before proceeding to create my own. However, if I do create my own... I think it may onlt work with the cd version's data file, so a good second question is, does anyone have the original installer for the diskette version? I shouldn't really need the data file... yet, but this if I manage to figure this out, It could be a useful app to include in Pentagram.

I've got the original version but the 2.12 (iirc) patch. Is there anything else I have to do to get the U8 patch working? Anything odd like resetting my resolution etc?
