Any two-player games like U7?

I know this has come up before, multiplayer in Exult:

And the general consensus has been, as in the FAQ, "No." :) I can understand why, and I don't have the expertise to change that.

That being said, does anyone know of a game or engine that I could play with my wife that would allow us to share the feel of a single player RPG? We played every good (and a few bad) Neverwinter module together, and tried UO, but that doesn't have the feel of a single-player game to be shared. We even played thru Diablo2 together, which was different but fun.

I'm thinking, based on the threads I've read, that U6O is really the closest to what I'm imagining. We tried 'hotseat' play on Black Gate, but she couldn't get in to watching me play the game, while she quickly got frustrated while playing for herself. It would be ideal if one of us could be the Avatar, and another of us control one of the party members, such as Iolo. I won't pretend to imagine it would be that easy, though.

I'm thinking a real role-playing game like U7, Interplay's LotR games (which are remarkably similar to U7, in my opinion) or maybe NWN. We really did not like NWN2. Any suggestions?

The Baldurs Gate and Icewind dale games can both be played multiplayer where you play through the story. BG are story orientated RPGs intended for single player (and as such probably better for what you're looking for) while IWD are more action orientated RPGs intended for multiplayer fun.

TY Colourless, I'll look at that. I have heard of the games, but when I tried IWD I struggled with the interface.

Going back to the Infinity engine after a decade of NWN can be difficult, yeah. But there's some really good gaming in there (BG series, IWD series, Planescape: Torment)

I really found the NWN interface easy to use and intuitive. I felt they completely ruined it with the sequel, just could not get over the poor design choices. Not to mention the much more limited modding options.

ive actually been playing the sequel again! and i think i figured out what bugs me so much about it...

its not the camera, really. by default its at the same angle as NWN1. but what seems to be the problem is, ok assuming your character is 6 feet tall, in NWN1 the walls are like 8 feet tall, so you can still see yourself. in NWN2 theyre like..20 feet tall. in outdoor areas its not a problem but when you get to dungeon crawling suddenly you have to be screwing with the camera constantly at a super high angle

all this time i played it i couldnt pin it down until like, last night. was a weird epiphany.

(first game is still so much better for many other reasons too tho)

It also seemed like the camera controls were way too sensitive and not adjustable, but I don't have a copy now so I can't look again.

While it wasn't quite like having 3 other people playing beside you, the henchmen were working quite well by HOTU, in my opinion. The main thing I still didn't quite like was the inability to 'look' at things, roll an examine check so to speak.

This was pretty clear in an adaptation of a classic DnD campaign, where there was this ratty old curtain, but if you examine it, it turns out to be a slime monster of some sort. In NWN, there wasn't much you could do to emulate the ability to roll a knowledge check to see if your character knew anything about these slime creatures, and stuff like that.
