Strange savegame bug and how to play this game

Hello everybody. I'm a big rpg fan but haven't played this one yet. I downloaded the latest stable version of exult and tried to play the game but ran into problems after leaving the first town and visiting lord british in his castle. first,the game crashed to desktop when i was in the castle. when i opened a saved game and returned, all the doors that i had opened with levers were open and the key to the supply room was gone. other items that i had previously taken in the castle was gone. I saw another thread mentioning this bug (this is not related to having too much stuff in the inventory since i just started playing) and i was wondering if i should download an earlier version of exult or try dosbox instead? are there big, game breaking bugs in dosbox as well?
