I'm running a Win7 machine, don't know if that's relevant or not, and when I first started Exult (downloaded the current version yesterday) the top of the screen and the bottom were cut off. This was fixed by tweaking the cfg file life so:
640
480
320
240
The documentation (http://exult.info/docs.php) insists that the default is supposed to be 320 x 200 for the original game (and weirdly 640 x 240 for display, which is just wrong), but this seems weird, and not just because it didn't work for me. It's also wrong because the actual cfg file was set to 320 x 200 + 640 x 400. I'm pretty sure the game did run in a standard 320 x 240, proper 4:3 aspect ratio, resolution originally, so I'm not sure why the documentation for Exult disagrees.
But anyway... Tweaking aside, I'm having fun in Britannia once again!

Re: Default Screen Resolutions
I can't speak for the clipping behavior you're seeing, but I'm pretty sure the original Ultima VII did run at 320x200, which was pretty standard at that time for games.

Re: Default Screen Resolutions
It most definitely ran at 320x200
Re: Default Screen Resolutions
As for the 320x200 check it out yourself with dosbox (of course disable all screen enhancements of dosbox). Take a screenshot via dosbox and look at tis size.
As for exult messing it up, which version did you try? 1.4.9rc1 or a recent snapshot? And no prior version installed?
I'm going to test it again in w7 when I return home from the hospital and find some time.
