True translation

We want to translate the Ultima 7 to the Portuguese.
The Exult's team could build a tool for editing or extracting text?
would be a very useful tool
many people would use this tool to translate and keep alive the flame of Ultima 7
I found the U7ED in (
http://ultima.oldgamesitalia.net/index.php?p=traduzione) but has many BUGS and leaves the translation very slow
create a powerful tool for editing the text and we will be eternally grateful.
we know nothing of programming, we only make this dream a reality.
would be great that you would create a tool to extract the text for the folder PATCH
so we could edit the file without damaging USECODE
Please help us,

http://si-french.sourceforge.net/ should have a good tool for translating U7 into another language, but right now I can't find their tool and their website is extremely slow, but in
http://si-french.sourceforge.net/HOWTO.php there are some good instructions which explain what tools we already provide and that you are indeed using the patch folder.
You might want to contact our team member Artaxerxes for help.

I use Windows XP.
I saw the
http://si-french.sourceforge.net/HOWTO.php but not much else I can use
The perl scripts are offline
see this conversation
http://log.usecode.org/exultlog.php?log=16Sep2002
http://log.usecode.org/exultlog.php?log=18Sep2002
but they are all old, and the scripts are gone.
I'll see if I artaxerxes, but seems to be difficult.
I've been seeing the Exult Tools wud, wuc and rip.
but had no success.

Thanks Dominus for pointing to that page. However, it is awfully old and missing important stuff. I really need to update it. I even wonder if the information is accurate since the conf file has changed so much and Marzo has added a whole bunch of new features since I wrote that document.
There are 3 approaches for translating Ultima 7.
1) Using the tool created by the Italian team (as you pointed out). It's the fastest way, and I wasn't aware of any bugs. You might want to contact DK about that (that's the author).
2) Using the 2nd way described in the doc that Dominus pointed to. Sourceforge changed their CVS and stuff and the perl scripts I mentioned relied on CVS. You pretty much need to do from a Linux box anyways, otherwise you'll have a tons of software to install on your Windows machine to use those scripts.
3) Using the 1st way described in the doc. Go to sf.net/projects/si-french and in the "files" section, download Tisane, which is a web interface and a few scripts for translation. It's actually easier to use since it allows you to define Standard Translations for certain words (to help consistency).
I haven't touched at the translation in a while, since the French version is working fairly ok (one bug report last year) and why change things when they work? But there has been some interest in translation lately, so maybe I could get involved again in it, but I need help with one specific point. I'll post a brand-new message calling for help on it.

I downloaded the Tisane, seems very useful
but as I said I am not a developer
and I could not use the tools that are in awk
I have to take this step: (wud [-s]-a 0xxx.uco> 0xxx.uc ") one by one? o.O
c'mon .. make it easy translation into all languages.

Here is a suggestion Rodrigo. Translating U7 takes a lot of time. Like the doc said, it took a team of 4 people over 2 years in our spare time. So I recommend you assemble a team of translators and make sure one of them has development skills (it's pretty much essential for this project anyways).
Get the developer to set up the environment. When it's done, it should be easy for your team to get translating.
As for the wud function, you can use a batch script. The "le_camomille.pl" script actually would take care of that if used with "-initialise".

@Artaxerxes, since this comes up from time to time, it would be helpfull if there were real documentation for translating. I always don't remember that stuff, for example I totally forgot the italian tools (what's the link for that?).
Maybe a FAQ section pointing to the translation efforts might be the right way.
I'm not exactly volunteering you for this job, especially as you are probably much busier with other stuff but if you could provide some pointers that really should go into a FAQ that would help!

I think it's time for a proper translation tool. If I can get help with the request posted in the other thread, I'll finish the code so anyone can translate U7 in their language easily using Tisane.
To be honest, with the new baby, work and stuff, I haven't following super closely the latest advances with regard to Exult and patch support. For instance, I am not even sure if one can use a shortcut to toggle between patched usecode and unpatched usecode, which is essential when translating in case the keywords are badly translated and you are stuck in a conversation.
It would be awesome for instance to allow Exult's usecode parser to understand and use phrase numbers instead of phrase offsets. That way, at the first run, Exult would convert the original U7 usecode into a 32bit, "phrase number" usecode. Then, one could drop an expacked file containing the translated text into a "translation" directory, and instruct Exult to use it. You could then theoritically flip from one version to another with a keybord shortcut or a config option.

would be great to make Tisane 100% functional
I say 100% in the case of its ease of use
because from what I read is a wonderful tool
need only enhances it and makes it easy to work for people who do not know progamação, like me.
For example, I do not know how to use the "le_camomille.pl" and not where to find it
perhaps using the tool of the Italians to extract the text for the Tisane is a good option. Really?
I think the best tool to help everyone is a glorious Tisane, but make it easier and then it will shine

Hi,
I'm one of the Italian translators.
I've worked for years with our tool and I'm quite sure there are no bugs (at least not under WinXP).
And it also have a lot of interesting features, like an “interactive dictionary”, which I consider really important in translating a game as huge as Ultima 7.
Over the years DK has improved it greatly and in fact it is (in my opinion) one of the best tool for translation that I've used so far.
If you need any assistance with the tool, feel free to write on our forum. I'll do whatever I can to help you!
Good luck with your translation: it won't be easy at all!

The Ancient One, which the current address of the forum?
I will post there pictures with the bugs. (I think are bugs)
However, I'm beginning to think that the U7ED I have the version 0.98 is incomplete.
It sure is a powerful tool to work offline, but some errors are appearing.

Hi, Rodrigo Melo!
This is the URL of the forum dedicated to Ultima Babylon:
http://www.oldgamesitalia.net/forum/ind ... owforum=95
It's an Italian forum (hosted by oldgamesitalia.net), but feel free to write in english.
I'm quite curious to know about bugs you have found...
Anyway, DK (the author of the tool) is still active, and I'm sure he can fix it.
Of course, if you are interested, we can also talk about translation and linguistic problems.

Hi Rodrigo,
You usually get an error like that when recompiling usecode and one of the .txt has been corrupted.
In the years I have had an error like that just a few times.
To solve the problem, you have to:
- delete the txt with the number of the function which gives the error;
- and overwrite the recompiled usecode with the original English one.
Then try to recompile the usecode (the tool will create another txt with the same name).
If you get the error again, then there is a problem we are not aware of.
For example there could be some letters of the Portuguese alphabet not supported by the tool.
But, first of all, try that.
The tool has worked very well for us and should work very well for you!
We have also tried it under a lot of different configurations (more than 20 people worked on the translation over the years!) and it has always worked fine.
Diego
PS
If possibile, you should really write on our forum, where more people will be able to help you.
