Hello all,
I saw some posts back in 1995 of a Ultima VI conversion using U7 style graphics. Anyone know if its another dead project? Seems to be so many these days. Real shame as it looked very cool.

Cheers,
Rob

If you are talking about the project I think you are talking about, then yes, no one has heard from that again. The converted raw map is still around, I think I have it somewhere...
And you've got the date wrong, I guess ;)

Wouldnt Ultima VI only have been about 3 years old in 95?? ;)

90 seriously?? Just checked the wikipedia entry and I was wrong hehe.
I didnt get my first pc, an IBM PS2 386SX, until 92 and I couldve sworn U6 was still 'new' when I got it right after that!!

Man I was behind the times already!!
Guess that explains why it seemed like Ultima 7 came out so quickly after that hahaha.. I thought Lord British started doing speed or something! :D

I"ve actually been working on that for the past few months now. It was something I always wanted to do since U6 was one of my favorite games, and seeing that it was dead, I figured to take a crack at it myself. i have a few towns such as skara, yew, empath abbey, and britain either complete or near complete, with npcs and their conversations and such.. I figured I'd get a few more towns before I released anything.. as I frown upon "teasers" that release something then quit....

I think you're talking about the patch I made a couple of years back. There was just too much that needed to be done, that's why I never got through it. Editing every single chunk in the land in order to create the Britannia of U6 is a mammoth task without some kind of tool that automatically converts the landscape.

Actually, as I recall someone DID send me a tool to convert the U6 landscape into U7, though I don't think that it worked properly and that, in the end, I would have had to basically go through, check and occasionally edit almost every tile anyway. I actually kept working on it every now and then for a few months afterward, but it eventually got buried under the pile of study and work that I was doing at the time and I never managed to get back into working on it.

I'd say that you really do need a small team if you're considering undertaking such a project as there is so much that needs to be done, like custom usecode, new items and graphics, all the conversations and, last but not least, the map. I suppose a single, utterly dedicated person could get through it all though.

Wow, you are still around. I tried emailing you about it once but I don't know if you got it, I figured you just weren't interested in it anymore.

I understand about the time though, I get in a few hours here and there, and I plan on doing some work in the next couple of weeks. The map part hasn't really been too troublesome for me, I basically do the main roads, then the towns, spacing all the chunks out as accurate as I can, then go from there. A lot of the chunks can still be used as is, such as the deep forest, although I'd probably alter it some, remove some things here and there. the usecode is pretty intense, but I can usually crank out a conversation usecode in an hour or so if I am uninterrupted. I figured I could try to recruit someone for dungeons, and usecode once I got a decent amount done.

Regarding autogenerating maps from a source: Such a mapping tool exists and was used to save a LOT of time mapping TFL. If anyone wants it let me know.

I wouldn't mind trying out the mapping program. It might give me an idea for what I have to work with when I create the Eodon map, since I want to expand areas and make certain changes.

Is it the one from Artaxerxes (which is I think in exult tools) or is it your own? Shouldn't this be in the tfl svn anyway? ;-)

There is a remake project of UVI using the dungeon siege engine, you can have a look here :

U5 Lazarus remake using the same engine has been released.

Wasn't the tool gpl, I thought it was even in exults cvs. If it's gpl you can easily put it in your svn providing you leave the headers alone (as far as I know at least) I'm talking about this tool (for those that don't remember) http://exult.info/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15263#p15263 It's not found at that location anymore though.

Done, thanks for notifying

I wish every Ultima game and pretty much any "old" CRPG out there could be converted into the U7 engine. :)

That would be awesome. A lot of the older ones such as Ultima I, II, and III could benefit from the U7 graphics and NPCS, more storyline added.

At the moment I'm playing Spiderweb newest game, Avernum 6, and I wish Jeff Vogel would use a new kind of engine, like for example the Exult one. Avernum's engine is basically still the same as in Exile only much much much nicer looking these days. And since he is great with graphics and in writing an elaborate storyline... him using the Exult engine would be a dream come true :)

Redoing Ultimas and other games is great and I'd love to play them but an original new game... *sigh*

I'd love to see one of the old Ultimas (1-4) remade with gemRB:

Take the Iris2 (Ultima Online) Engine.

A lot of shards take this Client as base for thier heavy customized freeshard.

You can easily take and modify this.

You can even do an singleplayer game.

It has an 2D-TileMode and also an 3D-TileMode. You can switch between inGame ;-).
