Thanks for the link. I don't know where they came up with the word "gump", but it was a character (the flying couch) in "The Land of Oz".

I vaguely recall Mike McShaffrey (if I'm even spelling his name right anymore) mentioning that it was used as an acronym. (Presumably graphical something something something.) I think he was credited as the "gumpmeister" on at least one of the U7s.
