Smith in SI under Exult 1.2

I am assured by people in rec. games.computer.ultima.series that in the original game Smith the horse can be talked with at the Castle in the Gorlab dream sequence. However when I run Exult 1.2 (which I have now finished the game on) it identifies that horse as "nightmare" and you can't talk to it.

I'm surprised nobody has noticed this bug before (I've searched the forum for all mentions of Smith). I'm running on Win98SE and if you want a saved game file I will be happy to send one if this problem hasn't been detected before.

*fires up DOSBox* *runs the original* Nope, you can't talk to Smith in the original by double-clicking him. He is identified as "nightmare" when you click him and he talks to you when you get close enough to him. At least in Exult 1.4, all of these happen plus Smith actually walks toward the avatar and starts talking if you are along the northern edge of the wall.

There *is* the thing that Exult displays a "ghost" portrait for Smith which isn't displayed in the original, but that's about it.

OK. Thanks for that. Still can't get Smith to talk in 1.2. Are Exult save files compatible with 1.4 ... if so I'll upgrade?

AFAIK, yes. There might be a minor issue here and there, though, but nothing major.

That's strange, he talked to ME in 1.2 when I came close enough... maybe it's just some random and minor glitch like people sitting on nonexistent chairs in BG's pubs?
