I have the last snapshot. In the gameplay options, the fps speed is set on 5. I put it on 8, but everytime I restart Exult, it get reverted to 5.
I also tried to set exult.cfg to "read only". Doesn't work.

Are you editing the one in your User folder?

Are you sure you haven't set the cfg to read only and then tried to change settings?
Please do the following:
Make sure it is the right cfg (write the path down here)
Start Exult from the program folder (not the shortcut)
change the following in Exult: in video settings scaler to point and in the gameplay settings the fps to something other than 5.
Exit exult and copy paste the contents of the cfg here.

I'm on vacation right now and away from PC. I will do it when I'll be back with my PC and let you know

I have the video setting scaler on Hg2x, maybe that's the reason. There's no way to use Hg2x and change the fps other than 5?

The scaler doesn't matter, but please do the steps.

Now it works. I just realized that when I launch Exult I don't have to open the settings from there but after I launched the game.
If I open the gameplay settings then I will have 5fps, but if I just launch the game as the first thing I do after launching Exult.exe, I have 8 fps (which is what I prefer)

ahhhh, makes sense. Maybe that option shouldn't show in the main menu. I'll file a bug report so I don't forget to take a look

I have only one last question (it doesn't concern the fps speed).
I'm using SIFixes for Serpent Isle, but I found online some patched version of some files (in particular gumps.vga, pointers.shp and sprites.vga). In order to have them working when playing through SIFixes, I must copy these files into the folder data of sifixes.
My question is: can I do it safely? Or there is the chance of some possible conflict?
As I said, files I'm interested in are gumps.vga, pointers.shp and sprites.vga

What/where are these patched versions? It should be fine to use and have no impact on the game speed.

Well, I use an Italian amateur localization of Ultima VII which runs on Exult and it comes with some files:
Gumps.vga, pointers.shp and sprites.vga, contained in a "patch" folder. They are somehow updated versions of the original SI files.
So they work separately on their own and there's no conflict if I put them into mods\sifixes\data to use them combined with SIFixes? Not just for the game speed, I say in general.

As long as they are done correctly in terms of dimensions and such, yes.

Actually these won't work correctly.
SIfixes has patched versions of some of those. At least gumps.vga. So this will revert back some of SI fixes.
Not to mention that the SI Fixes usecode is in English and will override the translated stuff.

I have an old SIFixes version which has been translated in Italian too, and I won't overwrite any already existing file.
That SIFIxes doesn't contain gumps.vga

When Marzo fixed the spells he also fixed them for the spellbook and magic scrolls. Since then (at least 3.5 years) we do have a gumps.vga

Damn. Apparently the spellbook and spell scrolls were fixed just after the version I have now (0.15.10, it contains the fixed spells but not the fixed spellbook and spell scrolls).
I can't use an updated version since that one was the last translated version in my language.

I never played the game. I don't understand what happens if I have the spell fixed but the spellbook and spell scrolls are the originals.

Do I need to manually select the words of power in order to cast a spell or I just need to click on a spell and the game does the rest?

Lastly, I have another question. The cursor speed seems very low, is that normal?

Nothing bad happens if you have the old graphics. it's just a nice touch that what you shout fits with what you click on.
I'd definitely use newer SI Fixes, since it has all the work missing done by Knight Captain

What about the bad cursor speed?

It looks laggy. But the rest of the games seems to run smoothly.
Any way to fix it?

Hmm, haven't noticed that. This is likely caused by mouse driver settings and/or running Exult at an too high in game resolution

It's still playable, it's not so bad actually. I was just thinking if maybe there's some option to change the mouse speed.
Any way I guess I can deal with it

I also play in fullscreen and I have the fast mouse option disabled, because when enabled it goes worst.

I know that some Logitech mouse drivers had some speed setting for cursor in games and that was not playing well with Exult and other SDL games. So see if you can enable or disable something in the drivers.

It's the scaler (and the resolution). If I change scaler (the Hg is the heavier, I guess) it goes smoother.
I wonder: it's my PC who can't handle it or it's just the scaler being too heavy (bad optimized)?

You can see how much CPU power Exult uses.

I don't use those scalers. I like my pixels pixely.

Hq3x I think it's the best, looks almost as a remastered lol
Anyway it's too heavy, but I switched to Hq2x with 800x600 and it seems fine to me.

The scalers are a taste thing
Personally I like the Brx ones better.

The higher the resolution in game (if you don't use the default 320x200, but AUTO) the more the game lags.
