That is good. I wonder how it compares to the Eagle and 2xsal we're currently using.
It would be possible to put this in Exult, if someone's willing to do the work.

No, that smart Texture Filtering wont be useful for exult. It's meant to be used to 3d texturing.
However,
http://www.hiend3d.com/hq3x.html probably would be useful. Source code included, and it already use by zsnes iirc.

zsnes is using it currently.
the snes9x team has no current plans on adding any new filters...
just because we are concentrating on accuracy over anything else.
tho, I might look into it.

Yes, that is what i *said*.... oh wait, I didn't... but I do now.
Ah the joys of having the 'Edit Post' option.

I speak with zsnes devs a lot... mostly pagefault. Heh... I even named ZSNES implementation of hq3x... but right now it is still isn't an official w32 release. 1.36 doesn't implement it. However in my testing I found it to be quite a bit faster and looked much better then 2xSAI and SuperEagle, at least on (relatively) fast systems.

That's incredibly good. I wonder if anyone has built that into video-processing software...

Most (all?) of these advanced scalers use pattern detection to function. As such, they have limited use on natural looking images, and would be of limited use in video-processing software. That's not to say entirely useless i.e. they might be useful for cell animation, but in general cases they wont do much.

would it be possible to have a standalone version of the filter and feed it a screenshot of Exultima to see what the result would look like? And while one's at it, why not post the result here too?

Zooming in the HQ3X-picture looks to me that hq3x filters a bit like Scale3x. You can see similiar Scale3x test case on here:
http://scale2x.sourceforge.net/algorithm.html
Also you can see comparison of gamepictures between Scale2x and Scale3x here:

hq3x is much more sophisicated than Scale3x. It will work in many more cases than Scale3x does.
It actually works quite a bit differently to Scale2x/3x, (Super)2xSaI and SuperEagle. All those purely work in RGB values and only look at pixels that are identical. However, hq3x works on both HSL and RGB values, and works on pixels that are similar, not identical.
Just so you know, Exult's scaling system will require a number of changes before something like hq3x can added. So, it will be a while before it's impelemented. But i do indent to implement it.
