Seriously, how do you install it? That part not very well documented

What OS are you using? For the XP install, just download the "Windows (95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP) Binary", find the folder you saved the exe to, and double-click it. During the install you will be asked the locations of your Ultima VII folders. Its program icon will be in the start menu.
I *don't* use the XP version mainly, so sorry if these instructions aren't completely accurate.

I just bought a HP m7640n Media Center PC.. which for most practical purposes, requires me to download XP as opposed to Media Center versions of software to install anything.

I did what you said, but double-clicking brings up an installer window that very quickly disappears and nothing else seems to happen.

I'm trying to run this off from the U7: Complete Ultima 7 CD

You're trying to run the Exult installer from this site, correct? You don't need to run any of the original U7 installers. Just copy the game folders from the CD to a convenient location.
If it doesn't work, you either have a corrupt download or it really doesn't work on Media Center. Be sure that you don't use a download manager, or try to right-click and "save" the link on the download page: just click on it and the installer will automatically begin downloading.

Exult works on Media Centre.
I've been running it on a Media Centre since 1.2 came out.

I'm having the same problem. I have the gog.com version. I'm running Linux Mint 17, it runs fine on dos box, but I really want to get this running with exult. I downloaded it off the LInux Mint software manager tool. I tried to to configure the files and it just gives me the same error. Please configure the exult files and try again. Err I'v looked every where to try and find the solution. PLEASE HELP!! THANKS

I had this problem also. I purchased the GOG version only to find out they tampered with the files and I couldn't get it to run. I had the CD version, so I just copied those files onto hard drive and pointed Exult to those directories and it worked perfectly fine unchanged. If you can find the CD version of the game, download or purchase that.

Exult works fine with the Gog version AFAIK.
One problem is that Maitiu needs to compile Exult from SVN. The version generally available through package managers is the ages old 1.2 version.

Edit: just tested again and at least the gog OS X bundle works. Will test now the Windows one.
