Are you using windows? You could try holding a mouse button down. You could also change Default Beep to none in Sounds and Audio Devices.

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing within the last few months. It is muchos annoying. I don't play enough to really worry about it, though.

I think it is caused by SDL 1.2.14.

you could try putting an old 1.2.13 SDL.dll in the Exult folder to see whether that "fixes" it.
But would be interesting to hear back from Wizardry whether that was on Windows or on Fedora...

Both FC14 and Vista experiences this. As well as XP on my laptop.

I suppose I am growing less than surprised that the response becomes "oh just change your system configuration". Im getting used to that answer.

Just tested older SDL.dlls. Indeed only SDL.dll version 1.2.14 has this problem that every Alt+ANYKEY press makes the peep sound. No idea what's changed to cause this.

See this discussion http://lists.libsdl.org/pipermail/sdl-l ... 73012.html, probably this is what is causing this. If you grab the current snapshot of the 1.2.x SDL branch you can compile your own version of SDL to fix it.

This is out of our control, so yes, once again we have to tell you to change your system...

I'll speak to Kirben whether he will consider to supply a self compiled SDL.dll in the Windows snapshots.

Using the older SDL I had does fix the beeping, though it seems to cause some other problems probably related to it being an older problem.

I don't have the capability to compile on Windows.

Er, I meant an older build. Though I suppose it would be an older problem too.
