[14:44:44] <avatario> hey all, i'm really struggling to get exult going on linux. i've used exult on windows for a couple of years now, but when trying to use it on linux, i just get 'Could not get the data files' error every time. my .cfg file points exactly to where the game files are :/
[14:55:48] <Dominus> hi avatario I cn help you!
[14:56:44] <Dominus> can you post the contents (only the necessary pointer to the game data) of the cfg? And what is the terminal printing when you sztart Exult?
[14:57:03] <Dominus> and finally where is the Black Gate static usecode file on your hard drive?
[15:12:38] <avatario> Data : /usr/share/games/exultDigital music : /usr/share/games/exult/musicMusic player: Internal SDL_mixer timidity synthesiserBlack Gate : not found (./static/endgame.dat)exult_bg.flx : foundSerpent Isle : not found (./static/sispeech.spc)exult_si.flx : found
[15:13:25] <avatario> <blackgate> <title> blackgate </title> <path> /usr/share/exult/ultbg/ </path>
[15:13:33] <avatario> </blackgate> <serpentisle> <title> serpentisle </title> <path> /usr/share/exult/si/ </path> </serpentisle>
[15:14:44] <avatario> what's the name of the usecode file?
[15:20:41] <avatario> /usr/share/exult/ultbg$ ls ... GAMEDAT.... STATIC
[15:22:40] <avatario> i've tried everything. permissions etc etc etc :/
[15:26:21] --> avataria has joined #exult
[15:26:35] <avataria> sorry was disconnected after my 'tried everything' line
[15:27:57] <-- avatario has left IRC (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[15:30:03] <Dominus> hmm, first thing, it seems you are using an old version of Exult. Best grab the latest git revision
[15:30:32] <Dominus> We have long ago abandoned SDL_Mixer but as we haven't had a proper release, distros still install ages old versiions
[15:31:12] <Dominus> the usecode file is called "usecode" :)
[15:32:43] <Dominus> what cfg file are you editing? it must be .exult.cfg and not exult.cfg. Note the . -> means the cfg file is hidden
[15:36:02] <avataria> ah that's a good start!
[15:36:15] <avataria> mine is from debian apt install exult
[15:37:03] <avataria> is there a .deb file option?
[15:39:07] <avataria> wew yeah i was on 1.2-18
[15:42:32] <Dominus> no, sorry, it's installing from source only at the moment
[15:43:23] <Dominus> https://github.com/exult/exult/archive/master.zip
[15:43:46] <avataria> that might be a little beyond my skillset but i will give it a go... is there a guide somewhere to installing from github source?
[15:44:05] <Dominus> then use ./autogen.sh and ./configure. You probably have all the required libs/sources installed already
[15:44:47] <Dominus> https://github.com/exult/exult/blob/master/INSTALL
[15:45:12] <Dominus> but ./autogen.sh, ./configure, make and make install should do it
[15:49:52] <avataria> i can't get it going sorry, getting dependency errors etc :/ could i request that the debian repos are updated please?
[16:02:17] <-- avataria has left IRC (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
[16:11:03] <-- BrainChild has left IRC ()
[16:14:51] <Dominus> they won't update them. because there is no official release and they are strict against taking on sources without a releyse
[16:16:00] <Dominus> *but* you can get there by apt install libsdl2-dev (or sdl2-dev), libvorbis, libogg, zlib
[16:16:23] <Dominus> ( I might have to look it up though)
[16:17:02] <Dominus> apt-get install libsdl2-dev
[16:17:32] <Dominus> libvorbis-dev, libogg-dev

[19:09:39] <jasonaowen> we could make an official release :)
[19:09:50] <jasonaowen> what's blocking a release right now?
[19:19:03] <Dominus> I made a list once https://sourceforge.net/p/exult/bugs/milestone/Release%20Block/
[19:19:24] <Dominus> I was hoping to get the intro sfx fixed etc... but yes, maybe it just needs a release
[19:20:04] <Dominus> but actually the biggest thing is the disapearing objects crashes that should be fixed in the branches but the big branch needs to be merged and played through
[20:58:43] --> Rottingbeef-2 has joined #exult
[21:51:07] <jasonaowen> do those issues exist in the current release? ("current") how would you feel about marking them as known issues and releasing anyway?
